In July, CAS laid off 133 workers after AtlasGlobal Airlines, the only users of CAS, ceased their flights to Ercan. This month, Nicosia Accident Court decided to liquidate the company.
Speaking on behalf of the redundant CAS employees, Erkut Öznergiz outlined the events that led up to the hunger strike. He said that compensation of six months salary owed to the laid-off workers had not been paid.
Öznergiz said that the government’s time was up and they had begun their hunger strike. He said, “It is our natural right to receive our compensation. We want this right. We want employees’ rights to be recognised in other institutions and organisations that are failing.
He said that for the time being, there were 30 people on hunger strike, but this number will increase with each passing day, he added.
Meanwhile, one of the hunger strikers fell ill and was taken to hospital.
