Police have caught a gang of criminals that specialised in smuggling cars into the TRNC from South Cyprus.
These cars were then broken down for spare parts, which were exported to Egypt.
Nicosia police received a tipoff the day before yesterday and raided a scrap merchant’s yard in the Hespolat industrial zone. There they arrested four people accused of smuggling. Four cars were also confiscated.
The people arrested include the two owners of the yard, Haluk Kasap and Cemile Minnos as well as two Egyptians. All four men were at Nicosia Court yesterday where police testified that they were conducting a wide ranging inquiry and looking for more accomplices.
