The British Residents Society hosted their annual Christmas event today in St Andrew’s Church Hall, Kyrenia. The “Christmas Cheer” event was well attended and also raised over 600TL for BRS’s nominated charity for this year, Tulips “Help Those with Cancer” Association. Members enjoyed catching up over glasses of mulled wine and homemade mincepies and brownies.
David Brown, Vice Chairman of the BRS, spoke to LGC News about the benefits of BRS membership and said they are actively looking at ways to reach a wider audience, particularly younger people and Turkish Cypriots. The BRS currently has around 1000 members and works hard providing information, support and advice to British people in North Cyprus. They also have direct access to the TRNC government and British High Commission and take an active role in resolving issues and representing the British community. The aims of the Society are to “foster friendly relations with the people of Cyprus, to advise and assist members and to make representation on their behalf to the authorities.”
BRS member benefits include access to representation, advice, social events and BRS-exclusive offers such as discounts on flights, medical fees and legal fees. Annual membership costs just £10 (plus a £5 joining fee) and is open to British passport holders who own or rent property in North Cyprus, and use it regularly or as a holiday or second home. People of other nationalities are able to apply for Associate Membership if they are married to a BRS member or hold an EU passport.
David said the BRS would welcome any feedback or suggestions on the role of the BRS, its activities and promoting membership. Please feel free to use the comments box below if you’d like to share any thoughts.
