The Turkish Cypriot Parliament has rushed through a law providing relief for those that produced bounced cheques.
President Eroglu has approved the bill and it is now law, although it is only temporary and will expire in two months. The aim is to provide relief to the thousands of people who may end up in jail for producing bouncing cheques. There will be a consultation period to allow for modifications to the law. Some see this law as an attempt to gain popularity at a time when there is unrest within the population.
15 people were released from jail yesterday, under the new law provisions.
