A 4 meter long basking shark was caught off Famagusta harbour yesterday.
Local fisherman, Firuz Denyali caught the basking shark weighing 250 kilos and then sold it to restaurants at TL10 per kilo.
The basking shark, (Cetorhinus maximus) can grow up to 11 metres long and weigh up to 7 tonnes – about the size and weight of a double-decker bus. It was hunted for for liver oil, thus numbers were decimated and is now considered to be an endangered species. Sadly, the shark is often caught in fishing nets, but is not considered to be dangerous to humans as it feeds off plankton.
