President Anastasiades has taken the initiative to include the Turkish language as an official EU language
President Akinci’s spokesman Baris Burcu, has described the move as a “well-intentioned initiative”. Turkish Cypriot daily Detay reported that the initiative had been heartily welcomed by the Turkish Cypriots.
Burcu noted that Turkish was one of the official languages of the Republic of Cyprus in which the Turkish Cypriots were partners in 1960. He added that they are continuing to make efforts to create a federal Cyprus.
Akinci’s spokesman pointed out, however, that the Turkish language should have been included in the list of EU official languages when Cyprus became a member of the EU in 2004.
He described the recent initiative as a “delayed step”, but “we could say that it is a well-intended initiative”, Burcu said.
