South Cyprus President Anastasiades met with EU Ambassadors today, briefing them on developments in the Cyprus problem.
The president emphasised the need for mutual agreement on the basis of the talks before the start of any negotiations on the Cyprus problem, adding that talks cannot take place for the sake of talks.
He said that the solution must be in line with Cyprus’ capacity as an EU member state and it should also incorporate the principles and values through an enhanced EU role in the negotiating process.
President Anastasiades referred to the package of proposals tabled which includes, among other things, the return of Maras to its “lawful inhabitants”, under the auspices of the United Nations.
Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot negotiators have been engaged in talks for several weeks now with a view to producing a joint statement, acceptable to both community leaders, before they begin direct talks, which are anticipated to resume in the coming weeks.
