President Mustafa Akıncı is expected to hand over the task of forming a government to leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman.
According to the information given by the Presidency, UBP leader Hüseyin Özgürgün will visit President Akıncı today at midday to return the mandate for establishing the government, which he was given on 24 January.
Although the UBP won the general election, it did not have enough seats to govern solely. The President also asked Özgürgün to remain as Prime Minister while he tried to form a coalition government.
However, as he was unable to do this because the main opposition party CTP along with the HP led by Kudret Ozsoyler, the DP led by Serdar Denktaş and the TDP, led by Cemal Özyiğit, agreed to form a four-party coalition, excluding the UBP and the YDP (Settlers’ Party).
