President Mustafa Akıncı said yesterday that he would sign the new Election Bill. This will be announced in the Official Gazette. Parliament will decide on the date of the elections.
On Tuesday a meeting was held at the Presidency headed by President Akinci to discuss the new bill which had been passed by parliament. The bill which reportedly had been so complex even the MPs could not understand it clearly, has been amended. Akinci met with the head of the Supreme Court, the leader of the Assembly, Sibel Siber, PM Huseyin Ozgurgun, CTP leader Tufan Erhurman and leader of the DP, Serdar Denktas and other party leaders to discuss the bill.
Sibel Siber told the press that the law had been under long discussion by the subcommittee and then passed by parliament and now had the required signature from the President.
The format of the election bill could mean that vote counting would take longer, particularly in the mixed votes.
