President Mustafa Akinci met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at UN headquarters in New York on Thursday.
After his half hour meeting with Ban, Akinci held a press conference. Noting that this was his first meeting with the UNSG, he commented that the atmosphere in the building reflected the positive atmosphere of the recently re-started Cyprus negotiations. He said:
“The positive atmosphere in Cyprus has had positive repercussions in this building as well. It is my belief that with this positive atmosphere we will be approaching to a better situation in Cyprus, so that future generations will not face grievances that older generations faced. This is what we are trying to achieve actually. To create a better future for our island GCs and TCs.
We have exchanged views on how we will proceed. The SG is very satisfied with what he has heard from us and from his special advisor Eide and we look forward from now on to have a productive negotiations as well as productive CBMS which will add to the quality to daily life of al inhabitants of Cyprus.
I’m very much convinced that with this mood and with the commitment of my people for a lasting and viable solution, we will proceed with this positive atmosphere and we will hopeful be achieving a mutually acceptable solution with in months rather than years.”
Akinci said he would be leaving in a positive mood and hoped this mood continue and develop a solution in the forthcoming months.
