President Mustafa Akinci has said that in Friday’s meeting in the Cyprus negotiations, both leaders focused on the remaining points of the central government’s decision-making process which are yet to be agreed. Some areas of this process were finalised in Thursday’s meeting.
President Akinci also said that during his meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland, he outlined the reasons for the Turkish Cypriot people’s concerns about security.
“We explained to Nuland the reasons why Turkish Cypriots have had concerns about security for all these years. Why do the Turkish Cypriots not want any future federation to be put at risk? What guarantees are there for us to keep this federation safe? Are there reasonable grounds for this? We are sure that she understood us very well.”
Akinci also said that the US maintains its position in supporting the negotiations and has made no proposals.
Nuland stated that she was satisfied with both community leaders’ efforts made towards reaching a settlement on the island. She said that they have put forward very creative ideas towards achieving a solution and good progress has been made. The US is a friend and a supporter of the Cypriot negotiations, she reiterated.
