President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke at a joint press conference following their meeting today.
President Erdogan referring to the Cyprus negotiations said that results cannot only be achieved by the Turkish Cypriot side.
“In order to resolve the Cyprus dispute, the Greek Cypriot side must stop creating difficulties and put sincere efforts into the process. Up until now, Northern Cyprus proved itself as the side that wants permanent peace in the island, the Greek side should also adopt the same initiative, if this happens we believe that 2015 will be the year of peace for Cyprus.”
A just and lasting solution in Cyprus is in the interest not only of the parties in the international community, particularly the European Union. At this point, Greece also needs to combine its efforts with ours and make the necessary contribution to finding the solution.
We have to solve the water shortage problems of the TRNC. We will transport 75 million cubic meters of water to Cyprus. Cyprus universities will continue to be our partner in the Cypriot economy. Maintaining the legitimate rights of the Turkish Cypriot is paramount. Nobody should doubt that.”
President Mustafa Akinci said:
“As Erdoğan stated, we have reached an important threshold in the Cyprus problem. I seek an additional impetus. I believe it will have an impact in the international debate. This cannot be a one-sided deal.
We will strive to find a solution in 2015. These issues not only depend on us. The discovery of natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean could be also be a catalyst for unification.
We will move forward in the negotiations which will begin in the near future. The leadership walks with the Cypriot community,” he said.
