18 Syrian Refugees Found at Kyrenia New Port

While North Cyprus has become a staging post for refugees, 18 Syrian refugees were caught yesterday trying to enter the country. In the early afternoon, police searched a ferry called the ‘Besparmak’ and discovered 18 Syrian male refugees hidden in a lorry at Kyrenia new harbour. They also discovered 544 cartons of contraband cigarettes being smuggled into the country.

The driver of the lorry Cumali Colak (45), and the refugees were detained. It is expected that the truck driver who helped to smuggle the illegal immigrants into the country will be prosecuted. The refugees will appear at Kyrenia court today.
