The 16th Olive Festival organised by the Girne Municipality has opened.
The festival that will continue until the 10th of October kicked off last night with a procession from Ramadan Cemil Square towards the Atatürk Monument.
Speaking during the opening of the festival the Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü said that permission given to 10 storey buildings and the city’s intense development was destroying the olive trees in the area alongside other major problems and added that the only way to overcome these problems was through a master plan.
President Mustafa Akıncı also said a few words during the opening ceremony.
He drew attention to the Girne-Çatalköy Master Plan and its importance to the region and added that inspections being carried out to make sure that everyone was sticking to the master plan was more important that the plan itself.
After the inaugural speeches were completed the festival was blessed with the traditional lighting of the dried olive branches.
A variety of stalls will be open throughout the festival and traditional hand made products and local cuisine are on sale.
Musicians both local and from Turkey will also perform throughout the 4 day festival.
