UN Road Map for Cyprus Problem

20 January 2013

The UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer will be bringing a road map with him when he returns in early March.

He will reportedly be insisting that urgent talks are held between President Eroglu and whoever wins the Greek Cypriot Presidential elections. These will be intensive and with a time frame of five to eight months. After that the UN feels that there will be no progress, because minds will be focused on the elections in Turkey during 2014. In addition, the UN anticipates being heavily involved in Syria during 2014.

The next Greek Cypriot president will be a new variable in the process as it is not known how he will feel about the historical negotiations. Turkey would like to carry on the talks from the last point reached rather than restart the process again. Turkey has also said that it hopes the talks will be concluded by the end of this year
