Passenger jet engine catches fire

The engine of a Turkish Airlines plane caught fire when it was hit by lightning during a domestic flight between Istanbul-İzmir , causing panic among the passengers.

The plane took off from Istanbul around 11 p.m. and was airborne when lightning struck it. One of the engines caught fire and passengers began panicking on board. One of the passengers, Bertan Atay who captured the whole event on his camera, said nothing else abnormal occurred during the flight and the lights remained on.

The plane landed smoothly at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport with no further problem and firefighters immediately intervened.

Turkish Airlines has some of the highest safety records in the industry, equalled only by British Airways, Quantas and Virgin Atlantic.
