Turkey’s NAVTEX hinders return to talks once again

8 January 2015

Turkey’s latest actions could put an end to any efforts to resume the Cyprus talks, a Greek Foreign Ministry source told CNA, ‘Famagusta Gazette’ reports.

President Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos discussed developments after Turkey issued another NAVTEX (notice to mariners) that Turkey’s seismic survey vessel ‘Barbaros Hayreddin Pasa’ would again be conducting seismic surveys offshore South Cyprus between 6th January and 6th April.

In response to the latest NAVTEX, the British High Commission has expressed its concern and urged everyone to support UN Special Envoy Espen Barth Eide so that peace talks can resume quickly.

“We are concerned by the continued tensions in the Republic of Cyprus’ EEZ and encourage all concerned to give active support to the work of the Special Adviser to the Secretary General, Mr Eide so that settlement talks can resume quickly, and proceed successfully” a spokesperson of the British High Commission in Cyprus said.
