Sweatshop scandal revealed in South Cyprus

A gang of Bangladeshis have used forged documents to transfer illegal workers to South Cyprus in a slave trade operation.

According to Greek Cypriot daily ‘Phileleftheros’, for a seven to eight thousand euro fee, they have provided Bangladeshis with false documents in exchange for work in the South.

According to reports, the suspicious movements of a Bangladeshi at Larnaca Airport, who was arrested for carrying a false passport, uncovered the operation.

Two illegal workers from Bangladesh as well as two Greek workers were subjected to mistreatment, reports say. The workers worked on a shift from 7.00  until 22:30,  They were also subjected to insults and harassment and received only 300 Euro for two months work.

According to the report, three members of the gang were arrested and a search is on for the fourth person.
