Suicide jump foiled

4 December 2012

Mehme Mavideniz, an 18 year old with a long history of mental health problems, climbed up to the roof of a tall building on Topcu Boulevard in Famagusta. The ensuing drama lasted for half an hour.

Mavideniz started screaming and crying from his perch. By chance, a family member was passing in the road below, but the youth refused to talk to him or anyone else, at one stage hanging from the roof just by his fingertips.

Famagusta police were quickly on the scene and attempted to talk Mavideniz down. The fire service arrived at the scene and put down an air bed under the jump spot.

Eventually Mavideniz was talked down from the roof of the half finished building. He has attempted to commit suicide before as a result of his mental problems.
