Hopes of relaunching negotiations dashed

3 January 2015

Turkey’s seismic research ship ‘Barbaros Hayreddin Pasa’, will begin new explorations off the south of the island on 5th January, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.

The vessel which belongs to TPAO [Turkish Petroleum Corporation], which is currently anchoring off Famagusta Port will take on supplies and then head towards the south-west of the island.

Seismic exploration by the ‘Barbaros’ is expected to continue until mid-February 2015, but it is noted that this period could be extended yet further. Turkey will issue a new NAVTEX [marine advisory] within the coming days.

The fact that the ‘Saipem 10000’ drilling vessel, used by the Italian and South Korean partnership ENI-Kogas extended its NAVTEX until 19th March for new exploration in the “Amathusa” field, and that the ‘Barbaros’ will continue exploration to the south of the island has dashed any hopes of negotiations resuming early in the new year.
