The request by President Anastasiades for a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will be the most difficult test for the UNSG regarding the Cyprus negotiations, Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Kibris Postasi’ comments.
Reportedly the Turkish Cypriot side will feel discomfort should UNSG Guterres meet with Anastasiades but at the same time not meet with President Akinci.
The paper further reports: “Sources close to the presidency said that there is no problem about Guterres meeting with Anastasiades, however for practical/ethical reasons, Guterres should also make an appointment with Akinci within a reasonable time frame. This should be announced before the meeting with Anastasiades. Otherwise, the opinion that the UN does not treat both Cypriot communities equally will gain strength in Washington”.
