Fire causes panic and fear in Old Famagusta

19 November 2012

A  fierce fire broke out  in the old walled city of Famagusta yesterday evening. The fire started in a garage and spread to nearby old buildings. Fear and panic spread throughout the old city in case the fire should spread out of control. There were occasional explosions as locals tried to put out the blaze.

The blaze was contained about an hour later by Famagusta Fire Department. An auto repair and sales shop was burned to the ground, Koray furniture shop was damaged and nearby cars were burned to ashes.

It is not known whether the fire resulted from an arson attack or if it was due to faulty electrics. Famagusta fire department and the police department will be investigating the possible cause of the fire.
