Farmers throwing unsold milk away

11 June 2016

Ninety tons of milk remain unsold every day in the TRNC, and it is alleged that casein protein and milk powder are being used for the production of hellim.

Oguz Ceyda, former chairman of the farmers union, speaking to the Turkish Cypriot daily Diyalog, argued that their milk products remains unsold, because the producers of hellim are being using casein protein and milk powder instead of milk, adding: “The way things are going, everybody who consumes milk, especially our youth, will look like Arnold Schwarzenegger”. Ceyda also claimed that they are consuming dairy products that are full of chemicals, adding that this has caused an increase of cancer in the country.

Candan Avunduk, chairman of the dairy producers union, said that the problem of the unsold milk has arisen because exports of hellim to Turkey have been reduced.

On the same issue, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris Gazetesi reports that Gazi Guney, an animal producer in Yesiltepe, complained that raw milk is not being purchased by the dairy board and is asking officials to find a solution to their problems. He added that he produces a half ton of milk every day and he has to throw it away because he cannot sell it elsewhere.

Furthermore, the paper reports that Minister for Agriculture and Natural Resources Nazim Cavusoglu, evaluating the problems of the milk producers at the Assembly, said that it was a very sensitive issue. He added that he had explained the problem to Turkish officials when they visited and asked for their help.
