Two men were arrested for the theft of copper cable belonging to the telephone office.

Nurettin Kurnaz and Kamil Genc were accused of stealing 220 metres of copper cable, cut between the villages of Kaplica and Mersinlik and selling it as scrap metal.

Both men appeared at Famagusta Court yesterday afternoon and pleading innocence, claimed that they had been given the cable by an employee in the telephone office.

Police testified that the cable had been cut and that the two defendants had sold the cable for TL 700 to a scrap company called Azbour.

The judge ordered both men be held for three days while police conclude their investigations.
