Bus services may be decimated

31 January 2013

Many bus and coach operators are preparing to give up their businesses because they are not making any money.

These operators have seen a jump in the number of private cars on the roads and their own vehicles classified as unsafe. This has impacted on their operations.

Most of the bus fleet consists of vehicle scrapped in Europe and then exported to the TRNC. Now the owners cannot find the funds to replace them or even make a good living.

There are some 350,000 cars on our roads and 600 buses. Hundreds of families make a living from buses but now times are bad. The government taxes fuel at 62% but is not providing any support to the distressed bus operators. Fare prices are high and many buses travel with a only handful of passengers. This makes the future of public bus services look rather bleak.
