Asil Nadir taken to hospital

25 June 2013

Jailed TRNC businessman Asil Nadir has been taken to prison hospital where he is said to be suffering from a heart condition.

71 year old Asil Nadir is currently serving a 10 year prison sentence in Belmarsh prison. This prison has one of the harshest regimes in England and is normally reserved for those who have been found guilty of very serious crimes, including terrorism.

Mr Nadir recently failed in his bid to be transferred to Turkey to serve his sentence there. He had hoped to see his ill 97 year old mother before she died.

In order to strengthen his bid, Mr Nadir had somehow managed to repay court costs of £1.1 million. He had earlier pleaded poverty in order to qualify for legal aid during his trial. This, at the same time that he was living in a Mayfair mansion during his trial at a rent of £20,000 per month.

However there is no sign of the £28.8 million that he took from his company PollyPeck.

Lord Chancellor Christopher Greyling rejected this bid as there was a chance that once in Turkey, the prison term would be significantly reduced or even cancelled.
