Armed hijacking on Nicosia to Kyrenia road

8 July 2013

A car was forcibly stopped after two unidentified males leapt in front of driver Cecdet Kara who had been heading home to Kyrenia on the main road from Nicosia. The driver was held at gunpoint and forced to drive on to Kyrenia.

When an altercation broke out between the driver and kidnapper in the passenger seat, the car lost control, smashing into nearside crash barriers 3 miles from Kyrenia. The kidnapper in the front drew a knife and stabbed Mr Kara in the shoulder and cut his hand during a scuffle, after which both kidnappers fled the area.

Armed police arrived at the scene where they found a gun inside the car that later turned out to be a toy. The imitation pistol was retained for finger printing.
